There have been several forums in Bisbee over the years and each has held temporary popularity but they have also suffered an inevitable end. WHY? Some of it was normal attrition to more popular sites but a lot of it had to do with the content of posts or the lack of moderation in a forum.
I had a recent conversation about the abandonment of Topix. The theory was put forward that it was due to one person. Following the conversation a post appeared on the B asking why a certain person wasn’t criticized about his
actions on topix or the B. Contrary to the comment it
hasn’t been smooth sailing for him. There have been no less than 41 times when The Avenger had threads moved, posts deleted or was given online warnings. But to be fair our focus can’t only be about the Bisbee Avenger that would be like looking at the causes for WWII and only focusing on the Japanese. This discussion must take an overall look at what has been going on in all the forums over the years.
It is just human nature to have selective blindness about ones beliefs and feelings but when people are brought into negotiation, prejudice for ones own position and selective blindness about who is to blame must be left at the door. It might be easy to simply condemn one side or another but it isn’t honest and it has no place in such an endeavor. If we can’t agree that BOTH sides have been at fault then nothing will ever change. Change in this case means
that some hard facts need to be faced, the first being that some pretty nasty comments have been made and many of the nastiest about people in government and individuals in the town which did not come from EF. I will not drag the examples forward just to prove that point. I am simply going to ask a direct question. Do you want it to stop? Can both sides admit they’ve been selective in their criticism as to who is at fault and put it behind them? Asking for reason or common sense doesn’t mean you have to like the people you’re at odds with, it only means you admit that it is time for a way to be found to coexist. To be successful such coexistence must have broad
based support and include rules of conduct that are simple. Such rules are the framework that permits
lively discussions without personal antagonisms diverting the topic. Nobody wants a boring forum but to avoid it we must be willing to control ourselves. There are some who will complain that this is what a forum is about or that such limitations remove the spice and excitement of discussions. The point is nobody has a right to employ personal attacks and if these complaints aren’t about
that but only the person doing it then what is really wanted isn’t equity just censorship.
