Yesterday’s Brewery Gulch Daze was a sparsely attended,
boring and lackluster event. So what has been causing this downturn in attendance? Why did the residents turn out in such low numbers? What happened to the tourists? It’s obvious something has been affecting potential attendees, but what? Was it just the adult focused entertainment? I think the answer to that question may be as obvious as the number of negative comments appearing on Topix. People took steps to avoid what they were afraid they would find; drinking and bitching. The event was held just before
the local elections, I suspect people anticipated the festivities would be crawling with local politicians and half tanked supporters and naysayers. Nobody wanted to be confronted with that. It is no surprise that negativity can have an impact. How often do we as individuals avoid those who constantly complain about their health,
their jobs or their families and who never have anything positive to say? Do those who expand that negativity to include our government, our businesses, and our residents have any different impact on us? No! Our local political pundits have not been content to air their personal frustrations one on one; they have been actively publishing them all over the internet. Is it any wonder that people didn’t want to face, or have the kids face, that unique joie de vivre? It’s time for a change and a different focus for local events.
